Keep Your Lift Chair in Top Shape for Longer With These Tips and Tricks

Acquiring a lift chair is one thing, and its maintenance is a different thing altogether. In essence, the hardest part about owning a lift chair is maintaining its form and functionality for the long haul. Regardless of whether you have the two-position, three-position or zero gravity lift chair, proper care and maintenance remain the key to keeping your chair functional. Wear and tear are unavoidable, but it's important to keep your device in good working condition for an extended life span. Here are some maintenance and care tips to keep your lift chair working optimally:

Do not exceed the maximum weight – lift chairs come with a maximum weight capacity, and this mustn't be exceeded when in use. Failure to adhere to the weight capacity increases the risk of damage and accidents on you as the user.

Keep it plugged in – the lift chair should be plugged into a grounded outlet, i.e., a three-pronged outlet on the wall and not an extension cord. Extension cords maybe bring issues with overheating, destroying the electrical mechanism of the chair or even get you entangled with the cables underneath.

Routine backup battery check – all lift chair models come with emergency batteries that kick in case of a power outage. These should be inspected and replaced every six months to prevent acid corrosion and possible damage to the battery unit.

Keep it clean – the fabric of the lift chair will get dirty with usage as any chair would. When this happens, clean the fabric by using mild cleaners. Before beginning the cleaning process, confirm that the chair is unplugged from the wall. While cleaning the fabric, ensure that the cleaners do not come into contact with the electrical components of the chair. Equally important, make sure that it is completely dry after cleaning before plugging it back into the wall again. Aside from the fabric, the lift track also needs some housekeeping from time to time. Using a damp duster or cloth wipe the track to get rid o any dirt or dust once every week.

Lubrication – your lift chair should be lubricated every three months with the manufacturer's approved lubricant. Lubricating the moving parts helps eliminate frictional wear and keep the internal parts functioning optimally.

Electrical care – the electrical components are one of the most important parts of the lift chair. These should be treated with care and routinely checked to ensure they are running properly. In case of any frayed wires or strange noises, call your manufacturer-recommended technician for a diagnosis.

Aside from the tips provided above, it's prudent to remember that the durability and functionality of your seat will heavily depend on everyday use too. For instance, avoid plopping into your lift chair as this degrades the moving parts; instead, ease yourself into it. On a similar note, the lift chair and its remote are not toys and should be kept away from kids.
